Legislature history collection, 1855 - 1939

The collection consists of assembled materials from various sources providing information about the history of the Kansas territorial and state legislatures. It includes letters and reminiscences from individuals who were in the Legislature, as well as some biographical sketches; records from the Free-State Legislature set up by free staters during the territorial era in opposition to the pro-slavery-led official Legislature; copies of records from the state legislature; correspondence from private individuals to legislators; poetry; and other such materials. Another topic of interest in the collection are materials related to the Legislative War of 1893 between the Republicans and the Populists in the House of Representatives. The records are organized chronologically by legislative session.

The first House of Representatives in the Kansas Legislature consisted of 75 members who were chosen for one year, and the first Senate consisted of 25 members who were chosen for two years.
